JAMMU, JUNE 19: To conserve, rejuvenate and recharge ground water, District administration Jammu has launched ‘Project Boond’ under the theme ‘Catch the rain when it falls and where it falls’.

This project will focus on three aspects - Rain Water Harvesting, Water Conservation and Ground Water Recharge. District Administration in collaboration with Panchayati Raj Institutions has identified nearly 3,000 works with capital outlay of Rs 50 Crore.

Project ‘Boond’ has six major themes, Rejuvenation of 833 existing water bodies(already identified) in the rural areas; Creation of 786 new water bodies; Repair of 734 existing Hand pumps; installation of 350 new Hand pumps in water stressed areas; development of 344 roof top water collecting structures on Government Buildings and creation of 33 new Check Dams.

Block Development Officers in consultation with PRIs have already drafted and implementing plans for collection of rain water and ground water recharge.

The Irrigation and flood control department and Integrated water shed management teams are already working on all the identified sites. These check dams are imperative for recharging the groundwater in Aquifers and will improve water table.

All the six themes focus on the collection of rain water mainly in arid/semi-arid regions of Jammu district and rise in ground water table to tackle the growing demand of water especially in arid parts of the district.

Deputy Commissioner Jammu Anshul Garg has also made an appeal to the people to come forward and participate in this initiative as teams in field and Jal Shakti Kendars established in Deputy Commissioner Jammu office are open for suggestions and feedback.
