Van Mahotsav Week-2021 culminates at Govt PG College for Women Gandhi Nagar

JAMMU, JULY 07: Van Mahotsav Week-2021 celebrations culminated today here at Government Women PG College Gandhi Nagar with the plantation of medicinal and ornamental trees and shrubs.

The plantation drive witnessed the participation of all the faculty members of the college. 

The week-long activities were conducted by the Department of Botany under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav India @ 75.  A series of activities were conducted under the patronage of Dr. Sangita Nagari, Principal of the College and convenership of Prof. Mala Bhasin, Head of Department of Botany.  The objective of this week-long celebration was to make the students aware about the importance and conservation of trees.

The programme was inaugurated by Principal Dr. Sangita Nagari who planted saplings in the Botanical Garden and NSS Garden followed by a successful plantation drive wherein the Head of Department of Botany Prof. Mala Bhasin along with faculty planted saplings of flowering and fruit trees. The second and third day witnessed an event on the theme- Plant a sapling at home / in surroundings for the students to make them aware about the importance of plants in our daily life. The students enthusiastically participated in the activity of planting saplings at home.

Ankita Sharma,  Shagun Butyaland, Harushi Sambyal bagged first, second and third positions, respectively. The event was organised by Dr. Renu Sharma and Prof. Meenakshi Sharma. On 4th day, an online Garland Making Competition was organised in which the students showcased their creativity and talent by making beautiful garlands at their respective places. Anchal Kotwal, Jasmeen Kour and Harman Kour got first, second and third Positions. The event was organised by Prof. Sania Hamid and Prof. Swarn Singh.

A Singing Competition was organised on 5th day, wherein students sang melodious songs on trees and flowers. Shreya Dutta, Diksha Manhas and, Harpreet Kour were the winners. The event was conducted by Dr. Harjeet Kour and Dr. Anju Koul. On day 6th of Van Mahotsav, an online lecture was organised for students and faculty. The   resource person was Dr. OP Sharma, a renowned botanist and environmentalist, who spoke on the uses of plants and human relationship with flora and fauna. He said that unfortunately ‘we did not pay much attention to whatever our ancestors had told us.’
