ADDC B’pora inaugurates National Handloom Day celebration at Sumbal

BANDIPORA, AUGUST 10: National Handloom Day was celebrated with the theme of “Hathkargha se Aatmanirbharta”, in keeping with the Prime Minister of India call for “Vocal for Local” and “Local for Global”.

 The programme was inaugurated by Additional District Development Commissioner, Ali Afsar Khan who was Chief Guest on the Occasion.

The programme was organized by the DDM NABARD, for the artisans of the district at the Dak Bungalow Sumbal Bandipora.

Chief Guest ADDC congratulated the NABARD on the celebration of the national Handloom day with the artisans and suggested that more such programs should be held in future as it will provide the way forward to the Artisans and they will also work for the betterment of the Handloom Sector.

 He Congratulated the NABARD for implementing the Off-farm producer organization (OFPO) in district Bandipora and Baramulla for the revival of the Carpet industry which is the main sector of the Handloom sector of the J&K.

On the occasion award was given to the Sehar Carpet Producer Company Limited, which is the lone Carpet Company promoted by NABARD and IGSSS in district Baramulla and Bandipora and is working for the revival of the Carpet industry by providing the platform for the 350 artisans of the district Baramulla and Bandipora.

 ADDC Bandipora awarded the Board of Directors for their contribution to the work of the Sehar Carpet Producer Company Limited.

DDM NABARD in his keynote address highlighted the emphasis of NABARD on the revival of the Handloom sector and underscored the importance of the handloom sector in taking forward the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. 

The DDM NABARD gave an overview of the 09th Handloom Census and said that women are a major player in the Handloom sector as they consist of a major workforce of 72 percent of the Artisan workforce of the Handloom sector. He said need is to focus on their marketing facility and increase their income then only handloom sector will flourish. 

He said that Handloom Sector is one of the key ingredients of J&K GSDP and contributes 13 percent to the GSDP. The departments need to work for the betterment of the artisans and provide them with multiple market channels so that more income will be added to the pocket of the artisan, he added.
