Kathua: District Road Safety Committee reviews implementation of action plan

KATHUA AUGUST 13: The District Road Safety Committee, keeping up with directions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, held its tenth meeting today.

It was the 2nd meeting of the current calendar year in Kathua held under the chairmanship of District Development Commissioner,  Rahul Yadav.

At the outset, a PowerPoint presentation was given by the Regional Transport Officer, Sunil Kumar, who also happens to be Member- Secretary of the District Road Safety Committee.

Giving brief outline of Motor Vehicles Department, Kathua,  the RTO informed that the department has conducted 192 challanes/ spot fine, collecting a sum of Rs 80.26 lacs as fine/ penalty in the year 2020-21, while in the first quarter of current financial year, it conducted 102 cases of challaning/ spot fine and  collected a sum of Rs. 11.44 Lakh as fine from the traffic violators. He stated that 11 driving licences were put on notice for suspension which subsequently were suspended during 2020-21 as no justifiable reasons were presented by the violators for their traffic offence.

In addition, important agenda items viz. Review on the Action Taken Report on the 9th District Road Safety Committee meeting, Additional measures to reduce road accidents and minimize fatalities due to road accidents like: Closure of unauthorized cuts on National Highway, control of Stray animals, Identification and rectification of black spots, Critical Care ambulances and functioning of Trauma Care Centre/ Emergency were discussed in the meeting in reference to which important instructions were given to the concerned for taking remedial measures.

The Chairman directed the NHAI to close all unauthorized cuts on the National Highway and prevent encroachment. The authorities of Health and Medical Education department were directed to present the Health care mechanism in the district to minimize mortality and morbidity due to road accidents. The NHAI and PW (R&B) department were also directed to identify and rectify the Black spots on National Highway and other roads of the District.
