The ongoing issue of drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir is a serious concern. Nearly 10 lac people here suffer Drug abuse which has over the years seen an exponential rise. Besides men, females in large numbers are also consuming cannabis, opioid and sedatives. The consumption impairs the life of abusers.

There are a number of factors that have contributed to the rise in drug abuse in J&K. These include:

  • The easy availability of drugs as J&K is a border state having porous border and the drugs are smuggled from across the border. Drug trafficking is a major problem in the region, and drugs are easily available in most parts of J&K.

  • The lack of awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. Many people in J&K are not aware of the harmful effects of drug abuse, and they do not know where to get help if they are struggling with addiction.

  • Directly or Indirectly affected by turmoil of the last many years in the state. This has created a sense of despair and hopelessness among many young people which led them to turn to drugs to seek solace. The social and economic problems in the region has also led to the menace.

The drug abuse put negative impacts on persons, families and society. It affects the development of Children who lives with their drug addicted parents. Persons addicted to drugs leads to mental and physical health problems, financial difficulties and social boycott.

The security forces in J&K are playing a key role in the fight against drug abuse. They have been conducting regular raids on drug trafficking networks, and they have arrested a large number of drug peddlers. The security forces have also been working to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, and they have been providing counseling and support to drug addicts. Besides security forces government and NGO’s have also taken several measures including campaigns, rehabilitation programs and crack down on drug peddlers.

However, more needs to be done to address the issue of drug abuse in J&K. The government needs to invest in prevention and rehabilitation programs, and it needs to work to create a more conducive environment for young people. The people of J&K also need to be more aware of the dangers of drug abuse, and they need to be willing to help those who are struggling with addiction. Government should take strict action against drug peddlers, Opioid cultivators and chemist shops who sell psychotropic medicines.

Together, we can work to combat the menace of drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir and create a healthier and more prosperous future for our youth.

The community also has a role to play in the fight against drug abuse. Parents need to talk to their children about the dangers of drug abuse and set a good example by not using drugs themselves. Parents and teachers instead of scolding their children must deal with them with love and patience to increase their moral and confidence . Community members can also help to raise awareness about the issue of drug abuse and support those who are struggling with addiction.
