Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir: The International Sikh Sports Council (ISSC) is making a concerted effort to revive traditional Sikh participation in hockey, with a special focus on the upcoming World Keshdhari Hockey Tournament 2024. Scheduled for November in Mohali, Punjab, the tournament will be a platform for Sikh players who maintain their “Sikhi Saroop” – uncut hair and beards – to showcase their talent and connect with their heritage.
During a recent meeting at the Press Club in Srinagar, ISSC Director Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad met with Jenab Raja Ghulam Nabi Wani, Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Hockey Academy. Mr. Peer Mohammad emphasized the importance of the tournament in not only promoting the sport but also fostering cultural pride among Sikh players.
In response, Chairman Wani pledged the J&K Hockey Academy’s full support for the tournament. He confirmed the participation of Gursikh players from Kashmir, who will be led by veteran hockey player and coach Amarjeet Singh and his technical team. The J&K Sports Council also extended its support for the event, ensuring its smooth organization.
The ISSC expressed its gratitude for the collaboration and expressed its eagerness to witness the success of the World Kesadhari Hockey Tournament 2024. Teams from various countries are expected to participate in this prestigious international event, making it a true celebration of Sikh culture and sporting spirit.
