Jammu & Kashmir: Railway officials recently conducted an extensive inspection of the newly constructed Chenab Rail Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge. The bridge, which spans the Chenab River, is situated between Sangaldan in the Ramban district and Reasi. With the completion of the inspection, rail services on this crucial line are set to commence soon.
The Chenab Rail Bridge is a remarkable feat of engineering, standing at a height of 359 meters (1,178 feet) above the riverbed, surpassing even the height of the Eiffel Tower. This bridge forms a critical link in the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail project, aimed at enhancing connectivity in the region.
The bridge’s construction involved overcoming numerous geographical and climatic challenges. The rugged terrain of the Himalayas and the seismic sensitivity of the region required innovative engineering solutions. The bridge’s design and construction incorporated advanced technology and materials to ensure stability and safety.
The inspection by railway officials was thorough, covering various aspects of the bridge’s structural integrity and operational readiness. Officials examined the bridge’s piers, deck, and supports, ensuring they met stringent safety standards. The inspection also included checks on the track alignment, signaling systems, and other essential infrastructure.
A senior railway official stated, “The Chenab Rail Bridge is a significant milestone in Indian Railways’ history. The inspection was comprehensive, and we are pleased with the outcomes. The bridge is ready for operations, and we are now focusing on the final preparations for the commencement of rail services.”
