Jammu, February 25, 2025 — On the eve of Mahashivratri, Jammu witnessed a grand Shobha Yatra, with thousands of devotees participating in the vibrant procession. Organized by the Shri Ranbireshwar Mandir Welfare Committee (SRMWC) in collaboration with the J&K Dharmarth Trust, the event celebrated the auspicious festival dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The Shobha Yatra commenced from the historic Shri Ranbireshwar Temple, one of Jammu's oldest Shiva temples. The procession meandered through the city's main bazaars, including Indira Chowk, Hari Market, Raghunath Bazaar, City Chowk, Purani Mandi, and Mubarak Mandi, before culminating back at the temple. Devotees, adorned in traditional attire, carried ornate idols of Lord Shiva, while various cultural performances and tableaux depicted scenes from Shiva's life, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The local administration, in coordination with the police and Jammu Municipal Corporation, implemented comprehensive measures to ensure the event's success. Enhanced security protocols and effective traffic management were in place to facilitate the smooth movement of the procession and maintain public safety.
Mahashivratri, translating to "The Great Night of Shiva," holds profound significance in Hinduism. It is believed to symbolize the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Devotees observe the festival through fasting, night-long vigils, and special prayers, seeking blessings for prosperity and spiritual growth. In Jammu and Kashmir, the festival is celebrated with unique fervor, with Kashmiri Pandits referring to it as 'Herath' and observing distinct rituals.
As the city of Jammu continues its Mahashivratri celebrations, various temples, including the Ranbireshwar Temple, Peer Kho Temple, Panjbakhtar Temple, and Har Ki Pouri, have organized special events and prayers. The communal harmony and enthusiastic participation witnessed during the Shobha Yatra underscore the region's rich cultural tapestry and the unifying power of tradition.
The festivities are set to continue, with devotees eagerly anticipating the midnight 'Nishita Kaal Puja,' considered the most auspicious time for worship on Mahashivratri. As the night progresses, the city remains enveloped in a spiritual ambiance, reflecting the deep-rooted devotion of its people.
