Pahalgam Terror Attack: 26 Dead as Militants Target Tourists

 

Pahalgam: At least 26 tourists lost their lives in a horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, earlier today. According to reports, the attackers allegedly asked victims for their names and religious identities before opening fire. The incident has sparked strong condemnation from top Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, who have pledged a stern response. Security forces have been instructed to carry out extensive operations to track down and neutralize those responsible.

The attack occurred in the popular tourist destination of Pahalgam, a scenic town in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. Eyewitnesses reported that armed militants targeted tourists, questioning them before opening fire. The victims included both domestic and  foreign travelers, though official confirmation on their identities is still awaited.

Local authorities and security forces rushed to the scene, cordoning off the area and initiating rescue operations. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals, with some reported in critical condition.

Home Minister Amit Shah, Intelligence Bureau (IB) Chief, and the Home Secretary have departed for Jammu and Kashmir to assess the situation. Shah condemned the attack, stating:
"Anguished by the terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. My thoughts are with the family members of the deceased. Those involved in this dastardly act of terror will not be spared, and we will come down heavily on the perpetrators with the harshest consequences."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief and condemnation, tweeting:
"I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected. Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice... they will not be spared!"

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, called the attackers "animals" and "inhuman," stating:
"I’m shocked beyond belief. This attack on our visitors is an abomination. The perpetrators of this attack are animals, inhuman & worthy of contempt. No words of condemnation are enough. I send my sympathies to the families of the deceased."

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has ordered security forces to conduct extensive counter-terrorism operations. A high alert has been declared across the region, with reinforcements deployed to track down the attackers.
