DC Poonch launches Ethnic Gojri Topi on Meesho, boosting local craft and artisan livelihoods

POONCH, SEPTEMBER 10: In a landmark move aimed at promoting the Pir Panjal region’s traditional craftsmanship, the Deputy Commissioner Poonch Vikas Kundal officially launched the iconic Gojri ethnic topi (headwear) on the e-commerce platform Meesho.

This initiative, driven by the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom and overseen by Assistant Director Handicrafts and Handloom, Joginder Mangol, is expected to open new economic opportunities for local artisans and showcase Poonch’s rich cultural heritage to a broader audience.

The Gojri topi, a symbol of the Gujjar community’s cultural identity, is meticulously handcrafted by local artisan Romia Khokher, whose skills have earned widespread appreciation.

The DC emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Launching the Gojri topi on a national e-commerce platform is a step towards not only increasing market access but also preserving and promoting the cultural identity of this hilly region in Jammu and Kashmir.”

Assistant Director Handicrafts, Joginder Mangol said that the Gojri topi’s availability on Meesho will expose our local artisans to wider markets and help them compete at a national level. This move will not only promote local crafts but also ensure a steady income for artisans.
